does vodka freeze?

Does Vodka Freeze? Should You Do It?

Ethanol, the alcohol in vodka, freezes at a much lower temperature than water. Due to the ethanol content, vodka freezes at -16 degrees Fahrenheit so if you put it in your freezer, which is typically set at zero degrees, it will not freeze.

It may seem appealing to have ready chilled vodka on hand, but according to Chris Montana, distiller and master blender, “Your tongue isn’t good at tasting frozen things and the mouth feel will be massively different because it thickens up.” While the taste of vodka is subtle compared to other spirits, quality vodka has notes of the grain mash it was distilled from.

To experience the most flavor from the vodka you drink, consume it somewhere between 32 and 39 degrees Fahrenheit stirred with ice or shaken with other chilled liquids.

Is it dangerous to drink vodka stored in the freezer?

Drinking vodka that’s been chilled in the freezer isn’t dangerous in itself, but it’s important to know what you’re drinking. According to Chris Montana, distiller and master blender, “You should know what you’re putting in your body. Vodka that hasn’t been made properly may contain methyl alcohol which isn’t good for you and it’s really easy to hide bad vodka when it’s super cold.”
